The Low-Sulfur Marine Fuel Production Refinery Construction Project has been designed with the objective of producing standard fuels for use in maritime transportation fleets and addressing the new environmental requirements of the shipping industry. The primary goal of this project is to produce marine fuel with a sulfur content of less than 0.5%, in compliance with the requirements of IMO 2020 and the MARPOL Annex VI standard.
The refinery will focus on the production of two main products, including Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) and Marine Gas Oil (MGO), providing the capability to supply cleaner marine fuels for domestic and regional markets.
Project Objectives and Implementation Necessity
Due to increasing environmental restrictions in the maritime industry, the use of low-sulfur fuels has become an international requirement. This project has been designed with the objectives of:
- Producing marine fuel in compliance with international standards
- Reducing emissions resulting from the consumption of heavy marine fuels
- Creating export capacity in the Persian Gulf region
- Supplying the requirements of domestic and international shipping lines
Production Process and Technology
The production process will include a series of refining and process units, the most important of which are:
- Primary Distillation Unit
- Hydrotreating Unit
- Desulfurization Unit
- Hydrogen Production Unit
- Final Product Treatment Unit
The technologies under evaluation include advanced refining methods such as Hydrotreating, RFCC, RCD, and desulfurization using locally developed catalysts.
